SEF URLs

We have the SEF URL option turned on in this Wiki. As a result, you can use much shorter. more meaningful URL's in references to pages within. When hovering over an internal link, the shorter URL form should be displayed. The name SEF URL comes from the fact that some search engine bots cannot follow or store parameters as part of the URL. Anything after the question mark (?) in a URL is a parameter. So a translation engine is turned on to recognize the short form URL's and convert them to the form expected by the software.


Here is a table showing the the translation performed in the software automatically. So when you see text like in the first column, you can replace it with text in the second column to get the actual, full name. The first column is showing the shortened name. Note that not all features of the TikiWiki software may be turned on and hence not all the rewrite rules may apply.

This translation table is as exists in TikiWiki version 2.2

Note that $1 implies a match to some number of one or more numerals in length. You take the portion that occurs where the $1 is shown and replicate it in the second column in place of the $1 shown. Similarly, a $A implies a match to a character name of one or more characters that may include special characters. The one instance of a $a implies a single character match.

The very last entry in the table shows how a Wiki Page name can simply occur as itself. The SEF URL translation works in most cases but some complicated Wiki page names may not be handled correctly. In particular, you need to make sure to change spaces in a Wiki page name to plus signs (+). This page's URL in full form is http://aysowiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=SEF+URLs whereas in shortened form is http://aysowiki.org/SEF+URLs. You can also prepend wiki- or page- to the name to make it a little more descriptive or to avoid a conflict with a page name matching a shortened form name.

Notice that the file gallery (list of files) is gotten to using the files shortened form. The actual link to the file that will cause a direct download is obtained by using the dl shortened form. So to download FileID 26, the shortened URL is http://aysowiki.org/dl26.
